Course objectives

  1. To rehearse and perform works of the orchestral repertoire
  2. To improve large ensemble playing skills
  3. To enjoy doing so

Grading  There are no examinations or papers for the course.  Since the Philharmonic is a class-participation, performance-oriented course, it is expected that each member will attend all rehearsals and performances and to become master his/her individual parts.  For any musical ensemble to be successful, each member must be committed to the group.  Lateness and absence are  detrimental to the espirit de corps and the making of music together.  Therefore, grades are based on attendance and musical preparation.

Accommodations for those with disabilities.  If you anticipate issues related to the format or requirements of this course, please contact Professor Bontrager.  I would like us to discuss ways to ensure your full participation in the course. If you determine that formal, disability-related accommodations are necessary, it is very important that you be registered with Disability Resources (621-3268; drc.arizona.edu ) and notify me of your eligibility for reasonable accommodations. We can then plan how best to coordinate your accommodations.

ATTENDANCE

  • Courtesy requires that Professor Bontrager be notified of all absences in advance.  Only in this manner can an absence be considered excused.
  • It is the student's responsibility to request excuses, and document absences/lateness.  Requests for excused absences/lateness must be made in advance via the online Absence request form otherwise they will be considered unexcused.
  • Absences from rehearsals, sectionals and concerts will be excused only in cases of personal emergency or incapacitating illness.  A doctor or health services note may be required.
  • Absence at dress rehearsals or concerts will result in a failing grade.
  • Absences for reasons other than the above or frequent lateness will lower your grade (see below).  Two tardies will count as one unexcused absence.
  • Each unexcused absence above one (1) will result in your grade  being lowered one letter.  Four (4) unexcused absences will cause dismissal with an F.
  • More than two (2) excused absences per concert cycle may result in a lower grade.
  • Attendance is taken promptly at 7:30PM, Room 232 standard time. All musicians should be in their places and warmed up before the start of each rehearsal and after break.
  • All holidays or special events observed by organized religions will be honored for those students who show affiliation with that particular religion.  Absences pre-approved by the UA Dean of Students (or Dean's designee) will be honored.

MUSICAL PREPARATION

In order for the orchestra to function at its optimal level and maximize each student's experience, regular practice outside of rehearsal is necessary.  In order to assist some students to focus their attention on specific difficulties in the repertoire, assignments with performance exams may be made at the conductors' and section coaches' discretion.

SEATING.   Seating and part assignments are made on a concert-by-concert basis at the discretion of Professor Bontrager.

MUSIC and FOLDERS.  You will be assigned music and a folder. To preserve the orchestral library and expensive rental parts, all music must be kept in this folder.  You are responsible for the music until it is collected at the final performance of the concert.   Charges for missing or damaged parts will be the  responsibility of the player and a grade of incomplete will be filed until the situation is resolved. If the player must be absent from a rehearsal, arrangements must be made to deliver the music to the rehearsal. The timely copying of bowings and changes are the responsibility of the player and section leader.

Concert Dress.  Women Floor-length dresses, black skirts or black pants, long-sleeved black blouse, black hose, black shoes.  No decolletage, bare shoulders or neck lines, distracting jewelry.  Men:  Black tuxedo (no exceptions), white shirt, black bow tie, black socks and shoes.

Changes to this syllabus, other than to the grading and attendance policies, are subject to change with reasonable advance notice, as deemed appropriate by the instructor.
