Technique Class

Spring 2007

Units: 1

All those who are interested in auditioning for the University of Arizona Drumline are invited to attend the Technique Class. High school seniors are encouraged to attend, but in order to receive credit they must be enrolled at the University either as a regular student or non-degree seeking student. Those who cannot take the course for credit are still encouraged to attend the semester.

The Technique Class will cover how we do things at the U of A and why we do them. Starting from "how to hold the sticks," the class will take you through the fundamentals of the U of A's approach to playing marching percussion; better preparing you, and thereby increasing your chances, for a successful audition for the UA Drumline. This class is open to all. Music majors, non-music majors, math majors, business majors, non-majors, high school seniors, even people who have never drummed before are welcome!

There are only two requirements for being eligible for the class:

  1. You can read basic rhythms (emphasis on 16th note based rhythms)
  2. You are serious about and will be auditioning for the U of A Drumline for the upcoming Fall 2007 season*

*Non-returning members of the 2006 UA Drumline are not eligible to attend as per requirement #2.

Those who are interested in auditioning for CYMBALS are strongly urged to attend the class as it will cover important concepts in rhythm and timing, as well as work on hand and mind dexterity.

The first meeting is Tuesday, January 16, at 6pm in Room 170 of the Music Building. Please bring a drum pad and some sticks and plan on playing at the first meeting. The class will then meet every Tuesday from 6pm-9pm.

Please attend the first meeting as it will be very important regarding registration for the class (it cannot be done through WebReg).
